Benbulben Mountain

Benbulben is Sligo’s most iconic natural landmark, known for its dramatic flat top and towering cliffs. Part of the Dartry Mountains, it offers scenic walking trails and panoramic views over Sligo Bay and the Atlantic. You don’t need to climb it to appreciate its beauty — even from the road, it’s a striking sight.

Park up at Luke’s Bridge, 5km north of Drumcliffe, to begin your Benbulben adventure. Walk past glacial tracks, wild gullies and babbling streams as you make your way to the flat-topped summit. Look out for unique flora and fauna, including Fringed Sandwort which dates back to the Ice Age.

The Benbulben Loop Trail, on the forest road, brings you to a striking waterfall where you can enjoy panoramic views of Sligo Bay and on a clear day, Donegal in the distance.

Visit the grave of renowned poet W.B. Yeats at Drumcliffe Cemetery near the base of Benbulben and later return to The Glasshouse Hotel for well deserved lunch and break. 

Practical Information about Visiting Benbulben

Parking: The primary parking area is located at the foot of the mountain, but it is advisable to arrive early during peak seasons as spaces can fill up quickly.

Difficulty: There are severval different routes going up Benbulben and the range of difficulty can vary but the general route is quite moderate.

Weather: Always check the weather before your hike up Benbulben so bring suitable clothing. You may need to bring waterproof clothing, suncream, hiking boots and walking poles as the trail may be slippy.

Snacks and Water: Bring plenty of snacks and water to stay hydrated and energised throughout your hike.

Timing: Start your hike early in the morning to avoid crowds. Enjoy the iconic mountain with stunning views and a unique landscape.
