Culleenamore is a beautiful, sheltered sandy beach tucked behind Strandhill, offering calm waters and safe bathing thanks to its position facing away from the open Atlantic. It’s a peaceful stretch of coastline with a long history. The area is dotted with sandbanks, creating a unique landscape that shifts with the tides.
On Summer days and at a low tide it is possible to see one of Ireland’s seal colonies. Cullenamore is known to have a natural oyster bed which produces fine oysters.
Horseracing at Culleenamore dates to the early 1800s and it is possible the tradition originated much earlier. As well as being one of the most beautiful locations in Ireland for such an event, the surrounding sand hills formed a natural grandstand for spectators who could see a race perfectly from start to finish.
