Located just over the border in Leitrim, the 15m-high Glencar Waterfall is situated near Glencar Lake, 11km west of Manorhamilton served as an inspiration to William Butler Yeats. The short walk from the car park leads through woodland and opens up to a picturesque view of the falls — a great stop for families or a quiet moment in nature.
It is particularly impressive after rain and can be viewed from a lovely wooded walk. There are more waterfalls visible from the road, although none is quite as romantic as this one which is mentioned by WB Yeats in his poem ‘The Stolen Child’. The facilities on site include a car park, picnic area, public toilets, playground, tea room and Tourist Information Point.
Just a short distance from Glencar Waterfall is the Devil’s Chimney (Sruth in Aghaidh An Aird) which is Ireland’s tallest waterfall, but there’s a catch, it only flows after heavy rain. Located on the Sligo-Leitrim border, this 150-metre cascade gets its name from the way strong winds can blow the water back up the cliff, creating an eerie, smoke-like effect.
