Knocknarea is also known as Queen Maeve Trail. There are three different routes up Knocknarea all different from the rest. The important part is that you Do Not climb up the Cairn when you get to the top to avoid any further structural damage. Care has to be taken as some of the routes may be slippery.
On a clear day you will be treated to views across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal. The two different routes which you can take is from either Strandhill or from Primrose Grange. Knocknarea stands at 327m with moderately difficult trails. There are car parks at both the entrances to either trail.
At the summit stands Queen Maeve’s Cairn, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic tomb where legend says the warrior queen of Connacht from Irish mythology is buried upright in full battle gear. The 55m-wide, 10m-high cairn is a protected National Monument, and climbing it is strictly forbidden.
